Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program

On December 26, 2017, FEMA opened its application period for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. While many might be familiar with the program and purpose, it may be new to others. So, we thought we would take a moment to share a bit about the program.

The AFG Program was implemented in 2001 and is administered by the FEMA GPD (Grants Program Directorate). The purpose of the program is to enhance the safety of the public and the safety of emergency responders. The program awards grant funds directly to fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) organizations, and state fire training academies. They can be located in any of the 50 states or District of Columbia, as well as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; or any federally recognized Native American tribe or tribal organization.

This year, the program will award more than $310.5 million in competitive grants. Funds from those grants can then be used to purchase equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources that are imperative to the protection of the public and emergency responders. Many considerations are made when awarding these grants, such as how the award could reduce property damage, injury, and death by reducing associated risks and hazards. They also consider the need of the applicant and the need to protect the country as a whole.
